LIFE TOGETHER

There are many ways to belong.

Life looks different for every person. Some people share a home with others. Some live independently in their own apartment. Some come together through Pines Social Club, gatherings at Red Leaf Lodge, or other parts of community life. What connects us isn’t a particular program or place. It’s a belief that everyone deserves a good life - one shaped by choice, meaningful relationships, opportunities to contribute, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Making a Good Home

Home is more than a place to live. Our L’Arche homes are places where people with and without intellectual disabilities share everyday life. There are meals to make, appointments to get to, birthdays to celebrate, disagreements to work through, favourite shows to watch, chores to do, friends to welcome, and plenty of ordinary moments in between.

The people who live in our homes are supported to make choices about their lives, pursue their interests and goals, maintain important relationships, and participate in the world around them.

We also believe the places we call home matter. Our homes should be safe, comfortable, welcoming, and beautiful - places people are proud to call their own. Good support makes this possible. So do relationships, trust, respect, and the countless small things that turn a house into a home.

Living Independently

For some people, a good life means having a place of their own. Through Supported Independent Living, people live in their own homes while receiving support shaped around their individual needs, goals, and choices. That support might include help with everyday responsibilities, appointments, health and wellness, finances, relationships, community participation, or simply navigating the unexpected things that are part of life.

Living independently doesn’t have to mean living alone in the world. People can remain connected to friends, gatherings, celebrations, programs, and relationships throughout L’Arche Arnprior and the wider community - choosing the connections that are meaningful to them.

Sharing Community

Life together extends well beyond our homes. You’ll find people from L’Arche Arnprior gathering at Pines Social Club, celebrating at Red Leaf Lodge, going to work, volunteering, enjoying local events, visiting favourite places, sharing meals, spending time with friends, and participating in the everyday life of the Ottawa Valley.

Some of the best moments aren’t planned at all. They’re the conversations around a kitchen table. The familiar face at a local coffee shop. Someone showing up when another person needs them. A new friendship beginning. An inside joke nobody else understands. This is how relationships grow - not through programs alone, but through people knowing one another.

A Life of Your Own

There is no single picture of a good life. For one person, it might mean greater independence. For another, deeper friendships. It might mean learning something new, finding meaningful work, becoming more involved locally, hosting friends for dinner, trying something that once seemed impossible, or simply feeling settled and at home.

Our role is not to decide what a good life should look like for someone else. It is to listen, support, encourage, and create the conditions in which each person can shape a life that is genuinely their own. Because belonging isn’t about fitting into someone else's life. It's about having a life - and a community - in which you have a real place.
